Is Deadly Premonition 2 suffering from technical issues?

As you’ve probably heard now that the Nintendo Switch is struggling with the poor performance in the console. The game director plans to get the awful framerates sorted out. According to the publisher “rising star,” the developers have started working on patches to improve the game.

Rich Leadbetter & John Linneman from the Digital Foundry also came to know about the shocking state of performance the game has. And decided to take a look at it, and see how bad it is. An interrogation scene in the room (see the 8-minute mark in the video below) sums it up.

  • Leadbetter: We’re rendering a room here for 22 FPS
  • Linneman: This is not good.

The performance in the open world of deadly premonition goes much worse than any switch game. Dropping to 15 FPS on average and going all the way to 4 to 2 FPS. The loading time is also atrocious. Some loading screens last up to more than a minute and freezes in between. There’s a lot of stuttering and freezes in the game when performing basic actions. Such as firing a gun or entering a vehicle, making the game beyond playable. Linneman stating that this kind of performance is not acceptable and should not be shipped.

What’s the root cause of poor performance?

Although the patches of deadly premonition 2 are on the way, Digital Foundry thinks it won’t be enough to sort out the performance issues.

Linneman has a theory that the reason for the game’s horrible lag and poor FPS could be the core problems tied to the CPU limitations. And assuming that the game’s performance was most likely optimized for the developer’s PC. Resulting in poor performance & technical limitations during the switch’s conversion process. The good news is that the game runs at 810p, which is progress from the first game’s 720p resolution.
