Shrek 5: Everything you need to know about the upcoming film of the Dreamworks franchise!

Post date:

Shrek 5 is definitely coming, but we will have to wait quite a while before its release.

We don’t know it for sure, but it is likely to be a reboot rather than a sequel of the Shrek franchise.

Shrek 5 already has an IMDB page, and there are rumors going around that we will even get to see a teaser or get some news this summer.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but let’s look at whatever we know, what the rumors are, and what we can expect from Dreamworks’ long-running franchise.

When will Shrek 5 come out?

We don’t have a solid release date as of yet. The fourth film came out in 2010, and Dreamworks dropped hints for another film. However, they did say the fourth was to be the last. Shrek 5 started developing after screenwriter Michael McCullers began working on the script in 2016.

Initially, they were aiming for a 2019 release. There was confirmation on the script being complete. Unfortunately, no news came after that.

Is it a reboot or a sequel?

As mentioned before, Shrek 5 will more likely be a reboot rather than a sequel. Apparently, this is the reason why the 2019 release never solidified, and everything went quiet.

Dreamworks probably want to spice up the franchise after it started lagging in Shrek Forever After. With all the remakes, they perhaps wanted to improve on things and rebrand. It would also be difficult to smoothly push the franchise’s storyline to the fifth movie. McCullers has said that this movie will “reinvent” the franchise by taking well-known characters and beginning anew.

Fans obviously had mixed reactions to this. The reboot is no surprise, though. NBC Universal’s parent company, Comcast, bought Dreamworks Animation in 2016, and the chief, Stevel Burke, wanted to revive its films.

According to reports, Chris Meledandri was in-charge of these revivals. He said: “The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

Who will be in the cast?

The plan is to have the original voice cast return but modify the storyline. So fans can get excited about having Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas back on Shrek 5!
