Just like any sequel of a popular dominating series, the weird elongated cloud of the red planet of the Solar System has made a comeback. The elongated plume is formed on one of the three southernmost volcanoes, Arsia Mons. The group of observers says that the formation of this strange white cloud has been done as anticipated. Read out the blog post to know more about this!!!
The scientists were waiting for the white cloud to form over the uphill surface of the planet Mars during this season. The white plume got formed over the Mar’s uphill surface of the 20 km high volcano, Arsia Mons. Arsia Mons is one of the three southernmost volcanoes of Mars located at the Tharsis bulge, and are collectively known as Tharsis Montes.
The long, thin cloud, made up of water ice, has re-appeared over the volcano but it is not showing any sort of connections with any of the volcanic.
The images of the strange white cloud were taken ion 17 July and 19 July. The pictures were taken by the Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) on Mars Express. Mars Express has been studying Mars from orbit for the past 16 years.
Jorge Hernandez-Bernal is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of the Basque Country of Spain as well as the lead author of the ongoing study. He said that the team has been studying and investigating the mysterious phenomenon and were expecting to see clouds like this around this time. Jorge said that this elongated cloud is formed every martian year during this time around the southern solstice. This repeats for 80 days and sometimes even more and follows a rapid daily cycle. He added that they are not known about the impressiveness of the cloud.
Eleni Ravanis who is a Young Graduate Trainee for the Mars Express mission said that The extent of the huge cloud can not be seen with a camera having a narrow field of view or if the observation is done during the afternoon.
The team of Mars Express science team has named the strange cloud as the Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud, AMEC.
